COLLECTIBLE In-Depth
Studio Intervallo
August 2024
This series, COLLECTIBLE In-Depth, unveils the backstage of contemporary creation. Tackling various topics from personal designer processes to the position of collectible design on the global design market, COLLECTIBLE In-Depth offers different views to suit all tastes. Today we speak with Studio Intervallo.
C: Why do you focus on contemporary collectible design? What does it mean for you?
SI: According to me, contemporary collectible design is an opportunity to express my work and therefore my sensitivity towards one of my great passions: the interior design. Creating limited editions and tailor-made pieces for our customers allows us to have unique and valuable home, in which the product matches the sensitivity of the customer to whom it belongs. The uniqueness of the pieces is an added value that cannot be compared to anything else. The overproduction of pieces, unconsciously makes us disaffection from what we have, while being able to be fond of an object makes this object have a very high value.
C: How do collaborations with artisans or craftspeople influence the final outcome of your collectible design pieces?
SI: For a designer, collaboration and discussion with craftsmen is a fundamental part of the work, which cannot be ignored.
Frequently, between the design and the product to be created there is a gap to be filled and this can be done only by comparing with the craftsmen who will carry out the work. The designer does not always have all the experience and knowledge of materials and manufacturing techniques that those who perfect their craftsmanship every day have. A product is always the sum of several factors, including the contribution of the craftsman who creates it.
C: Can you talk about a new collection that you release for COLLECTIBLE this year?
The Roma collection is the new collection I’ll present to COLLECTIBLE 2024, New York Edition. The new collection is able to enhance oak wood, a precious material that acquires value and a special patina over time. A single-material collection, characterized by a perimeter detail, decorated with a colored line that defines its shapes. The massive cylindrical legs in solid wood at the base support the tops, precious surfaces which, together with the vertical elements, give the furniture a solidity that is perceived by sight.
Its name reminds us that things made with craftsmanship and high-quality materials last many years, last forever.
C: What makes design collectible in your eyes?
SI: What makes a piece of design a collector's item is the research behind the product, or rather the sensitivity with which the designer manages to describe his work. The artisan quality with which it is made and therefore the mastery that the craftsman is able to bring to the creation of the product, in which all the experience and tradition of his work is manifested. The number of pieces produced, it is in fact important to create limited editions in which the pieces are numbered and certified. Finally, the emotion that this work manages to create in the eyes of those who look at it.
