What is the relationship between collectible design and the interior space? How do objects take on new meaning when thoughtfully placed within curated interiors, and how can the juxtaposition of contemporary with vintage pieces or antiques result in poignant new design narratives? Taking the new VIGNETTE section as its launching point, the discussion reveals how these presentations distill each studio’s creative vision, how interior design can elevate collectible works, and how collectible pieces, in turn, activate space with emotional and cultural resonance.
With: Crina Arghirescu Rogard (Interior Architect & Designer, Founder of Crina Arghirescu Architecture), Drew McGukin (Interior & Product Designer, Founder Drew McGukin Interiors), Michael Hilal, Studio Michael Hilal (Curator of VIGNETTE, COLLECTIBLE NYC) and Emily Thurman (Interior Designer; Founder, Emily Thurman Studio)

DESIGNING LEGACY: The New Heirlooms

Thursday, September 4 at 4:00 pm
The value of objects and furniture with longevity is ever-increasing. As globalization and mass-market production continues to drive consumption of work that is designed to be discarded, the collectible design market has grown in response as we seek to add more meaning to our homes. Occupying the liminal space between art and design, collectible works have become contemporary heirlooms—pieces that combine artistry, customization, and conceptual significance. Ryan Waddoups, Deputy Editor of Galerie Magazine, speaks with leading interior designers about their experience commissioning and placing these pieces, as well as educating clients about the value of artisanship and limited editions.
With: Clive Lonstein (Founder & Principal, Clive Lonstein), Alfredo Paredes (Founder and Principal, Alfredo Paredes Studio) and Andrew Torrey (Founder & Principal Designer, TORREY)

The design world generally operates on the notion that objects and spaces can impact our lives: that design can solve problems, elevate everyday actions, and make it easier, more pleasurable, or more aesthetically pleasing to do them. But what about the deeper, human impacts design can have on our lives? Using the work of artist Allan Wexler, including his recent collaborative performances for the forthcoming book, A New Futurist Cookbook, with architect and Office of Tangible Space co-founder Michael Yarinsky, this conversation will unpack what, exactly, those impacts are, and how we might shift the ways we interact with objects and spaces in order to be more conscious of what we do each day—and to be better people for ourselves, our communities, and our world.
With: Allan Wexler (Artist and Educator) and Michael Yarinsky (Architect and Co-founder, Office of Tangible Space)

This panel, moderated by Sight Unseen co-founder and editor Jill Singer, will explore the intersection of design, culture, and media, speaking to some of the most interesting new creators about how they built their platforms, why their content resonates in the current climate, and what the new role of media is in design and culture.
