This new series, Design bites, unveil the backstage of contemporary creation. Tackling various topics from personal designer processes to the position of Collectible design on the global design market; these bites offer different views to suit all tastes. Today we talk with Erik Olovsson from Studio EO.
COLLECTIBLE: Can you talk about a new piece/collection that you release for COLLECTIBLE SALON
Erik Olovsson: My new series of glass objects that I call ”Wrinkle Vases”, these pieces are made from hand-sculpted clay moulds. It’s a process I really enjoy as it’s very much in the moment. I carve out a shape in the clay with my hands and then right after the glass is blown into the form. It’s a very intuitive way of working and gives room to create at the moment.

C: How did you get into collectible design? Why did you focus your practice on this type of design rather than industrial design?
EO: I really enjoy experimenting with materials and push them in different directions and find a new use for them, I feel this is quite limited when working in the traditional design scene. Making unique pieces and collectible objets gives more freedom to this and the works I’m aiming for.
C: What have you been up to recently? What are the next projects/exhibitions you wish to highlight?
EO: This year have been a year to reflect and slow things down. I took this time to sketch and made tryouts for new projects. I’ve been obsessed with making miniature models in clay and cardboard. I’m currently working on a series of sculptures in stone and glass that I will present next year.
C: What is your favourite material?
EO: I’ve been working with stone and glass a lot and I still enjoy working with them as materials. With glass, I find it interesting to work with this indefinite melting material that is formed by gravity and suddenly becomes a fixed form. And to combine this glossy, transparent material with its solid counterpart is to me interesting and something I would continue exploring.
