Design bites
Movimento Club

This new series, Design bites, unveil the backstage of contemporary creation. Tackling various topics from personal designer processes to the position of Collectible design on the global design market; these bites offer different views to suit all tastes. Today we talk with the Artefatto Design Studio, founder of the Movimento Club.
COLLECTIBLE: How did you get into collectible design? Why did you start your gallery?
Artefatto Design Studio: We primarily started Movimento Club to give independent designers working in collectible design, a platform on which to show their work to the world, however, we have always believed that collectible design deserves to be opened up to more designers and more collectors. At Movimento we believe that great design speaks for itself and does not rely on a name or a price-tag to give it value. For this reason, we promote work from emerging brands that we believe have true potential in the collectible design scene. On top of this, there are so many amazing designers from different parts of the world where perhaps high-end or collectible design doesn’t have huge representation. Our goal is to connect these great designers with collectors from around the world and to give them the recognition they deserve.
“ We strongly believe that the future of design is in the hands of young designers and without a platform to showcase their work, much of their incredible innovation has never been seen.”
C: Why focus on emerging brands and how do you discover new designers?
ADS: It is clear to us that the boldest innovation comes from these emerging brands, those that are driven by research and experimentation. Because of this, we strongly believe that the future of design is in the hands of young designers and without a platform to showcase their work, much of their incredible innovation has never been seen. We look for designers with something truly unique, something that has an original take on the way things are currently done. We are constantly on the lookout for fresh talent, we’re visiting design shows, having meetings and talking with interesting and like-minded people, but crucially, we are always receiving and welcoming applications. If you are an emerging brand or an independent designer then please do send us some of your work and we will look at introducing you into Movimento Club.
C: Can you talk about the designers you present for COLLECTIBLE SALON? What makes their practice and pieces unique?
ADS: We are presenting a global selection of designers from countries as far-flung as South Korea, Russia and the USA. It has always been our intention to act as a window into the design scene around the world, we hope that our Nomads exhibition will be able to do this. The pieces featured in this exhibition use new materials, new processes and new, innovative ways to use the resources we already have. Take the SSB01W bench for example, sashaxsasha have taken a material traditionally used for expensive and sophisticated joinery and applied it to their very contemporary piece with seemingly random forms. How wire Extensions is a brand built around an innovative, recycling-conscious manufacturing process, where the waste material of 3d printing is used to create fantastic, bone-like structures. Meanwhile, Jesper Eriksson has created a series of cubic furniture pieces made from tiles of Anthracite Coal which he has sourced from South Whales.
C: What is next for Movimento Club?
ADS: Movimento Club is always growing and evolving. This summer we will be opening a showroom in Milan where we will be putting on temporary exhibitions of Movimento members. We hope these exhibitions will give exposure to the designers but will also help to connect our designers with interested collectors and to one another. While we have been operating almost exclusively online for nearly a year, as soon as it is safe to do so, we will be looking at physical exhibitions at various design weeks around the world and of course at the next COLLECTIBLE Fair.
