Design bites
House of Today
18 May 2021
This new series, Design bites, unveil the backstage of contemporary creation. Tackling various topics from personal designer processes to the position of Collectible design on the global design market; these bites offer different views to suit all tastes. Today we talk with House of Today.
COLLECTIBLE: Can you talk about the designers you present for COLLECTIBLE SALON, what makes their practice/pieces unique?
House of Today: House of Today will be presenting newly commissioned works by designer duo Sayar & Garibeh, Mary-Lynn Massoud & Rasha Nawam, and Hala Matta. “Ceramics from Lebanon” is a collective online exhibition, dedicated to the production of contemporary pottery. Its purpose is to support the cultural significance of hand-built ceramics, which generate a sense of pride among artisans, artists and people currently living in Lebanon.
House of Today’s dedication to the enrichment of Lebanon’s design culture takes shape with a collection of objects that respond to specific functions and contexts, while its contrasted interplay is a captivating synthesis of rugged shapes, vibrant colors, and dynamic textures.
“The residency is designed to allow artists to take risks and pursue new projects and ideas.”
C: What have you been up to recently?
HT: House of Today finds itself more than ever exploring further mentoring and nurturing opportunities for our Lebanese designers outside of Lebanon. The explosion has impacted the lives of many of our talents and made the work environment difficult. As part of its mission, House of Today combines the efforts to pursue opportunities such as the latest Art Residency Program at Anderson Ranch (Aspen, Colorado, USA) where designer duo Sayar & Garibeh and artist Mary-Lynn Massoud have been challenged by their own discipline, investigating new techniques, materials and time processes.
Anderson Ranch's Artists-in-Residence Program fosters creative, intellectual and professional growth for emerging and established artists. The residency is designed to allow artists to take risks and pursue new projects and ideas. Artist-in-residence programs give artists the opportunity to live and work outside of their usual environments, providing them with time to reflect, research, or produce work.
C: How do you discover new designers?
HT: Through a process of open calls and personal research, House of Today selects new and emerging talent - those showing the highest potential in the field of design (out of graduated students and rising professionals). In doing so, House of Today creates a fresh repertoire of design for Lebanon.
