COLLECTIBLE In-Depth
March 2024
This series, COLLECTIBLE In-Depth, unveils the backstage of contemporary creation. Tackling various topics from personal designer processes to the position of collectible design on the global design market, COLLECTIBLE In-Depth offers different views to suit all tastes. Today we talk to Eric Jandar from VENERE.
COLLECTIBLE: Why do you focus on contemporary collectible design? What does it mean for you?
Eric Jandar: I'm drawn to contemporary collectible design for its fusion of beauty, functionality, and personal expression. It's a realm where art meets functionality, allowing me to channel my love for contemporary art into tangible creations. This field provides a deeply personal canvas for me to infuse my designs with eclectic inspirations and meaningful references. Each piece becomes a reflection of my artistic journey, bridging the gap between traditional design and contemporary arts.
C: How did you get into collectible design?
EJ: Originating from a fashion design background, I've collaborated with numerous fashion houses, crafting products for diverse audiences. Yet, my journey into collectible design began long before, in my teenage years, where I unknowingly pondered its essence. I envisioned intricate pieces, particularly in glass. Now, delving into collectible design is an endeavor to manifest something profoundly personal—a fusion of my references and vision.
C: Where do you take your inspiration from?
EJ: I draw inspiration from everywhere—it's omnipresent! There are no limits to the sources of my inspiration. I firmly believe that our memories, whether consciously recalled or forgotten, shape our creative endeavors. Sometimes, inspiration strikes from forgotten encounters, resurfacing unexpectedly. Being open-minded, curious, and observant is key to my process. Additionally, contemporary art holds a significant influence over my creative journey, contributing valuable perspectives and insights.
C: Are you more result or process oriented?
EJ: I value both the process and the result equally. The journey of creation, from making to installation, holds significance alongside the final outcome. For instance, in a recent project, 'What a Nightmare,' I carefully considered the installation process as an integral part of the concept, aligning it with the desired end result. Every step is a deliberate exploration, aimed at revealing and experimenting with different emotions.
C: What is your favorite material?
EJ: I don’t have a favorite material, although my initial pieces were crafted from glass, sparking a deep connection dating back to my teenage years when I envisioned glass furnitures. I approach material selection with an open mind.
No material are off-limits. Typically, I conceptualize a piece first, considering materials later. Each material is chosen deliberately to complement the concept and enhance its essence.
