COLLECTIBLE In-Depth
Van Erp Objects
April 2024
This series, COLLECTIBLE In-Depth, unveils the backstage of contemporary creation. Tackling various topics from personal designer processes to the position of collectible design on the global design market, COLLECTIBLE In-Depth offers different views to suit all tastes. Today we speak with Tom and Wim van Erp from Van Erp Objects.
COLLECTIBLE: Can you talk about a new piece / collection that you release for COLLECTIBLE this year?
Tom & Wim Van Erp: We will be presenting: 'Tre△sure’
Treasures have captured the imagination for as long as humanity has existed. Beauty, luxury and mystery, coupled with the sense of adventure. Entire expeditions were launched in search of El Dorado's gold. And who, as a child, wasn't on the edge of their seat watching adventure films where the quest started with a treasure map?
We have tried to capture this feeling with 'Tre△sure’, an evolving series of design objects, constructed from meticulously composed brass triangles which we have adopted as our signature shape. Building blocks that, due to their small size, are suitable for processes such as patination, oxidation and polishing.
C: Why did you choose brass?
TVE & SVE: Brass is versatile in a way that captures the concept very nicely. The oxidation and patina as a reference to antiquity and the mystical. While polished brass represents luxury and beauty. Because the triangles are connected to each other at different angles, a play of light is created when you move past the objects. Sparkling qualities that, for a brief moment, make you feel like Indiana Jones entering a treasure trove.
C: Can you briefly describe your process?
TVE & SVE: Research often underlies our designs. We are guided by the properties of the material and processing techniques. In our design language we are always looking for ways to let the material speak. Experimentation and improvisation is a big part of the process of finding new ways to let the material be the star of the show. Our expertise and years of experience in working with metals in various disciplines also play a role.
C: Can you elaborate on that?
TVE & SVE: By combining modern techniques with old crafts, a field of tension is created. For example the extremely precise parts cut with laser technology ensure order and regularity. While techniques such as patination and oxidation are very difficult to control, making a uniform result virtually impossible. The constant struggle to manage all influencing factors as best as possible can sometimes be quite frustrating. It's a very fine line between the desired effect and failure.
C: That must be painful at times?
TVE & SVE: It can be sometimes, although typically the failures are usually the birthplace for new discoveries. Nevertheless, we see it as our challenge to find a balance between these two worlds. When we succeed, our work comes to life. The capricious outcome of the patination and oxidation process ensures the individuality of each part. This creates a sense of wonder that allows you to keep looking at the objects and discover small details again and again.
