This series, COLLECTIBLE In-Depth, unveils the backstage of contemporary creation. Tackling various topics from personal designer processes to the position of collectible design on the global design market, COLLECTIBLE In-Depth offers different views to suit all tastes. Today we speak with Max Radford.
C: Why do you focus on contemporary collectible design? What does it mean for you?
Max Radford: We focus on collectible design as it is THE interesting area in the art & design worlds; where people are truly able to experiment and with materiality and concepts of usability whilst using this space as a platform to tell new stories.
C: What has changed the past couple of years in the narrative of collectible design?
MR: These days collectible design is being used as a platform to discuss societal issues as well as being an area for exploration. This is something that we are following closely as a gallery and fostering in the UK.
C: How did you get into collectible design? Why did you start your gallery?
MR: I got into collectible design though through my own research practice; I spent my time combing old design books and posting my finds to instagram. I began to look out for new design on the platform itself as well as posting and though this became aware of a slew of Designers in the UK. None of these designers had space to show works in London itself so as a designer and appreciator I took it upon myself to create a space for the works to be seen.
C: What have you been up to recently? What are the next projects/exhibitions you wish to highlight?
MR: We have just celebrated our 4th birthday with a show of Eddie Olin’s new ash trays alongside opening two permanent showrooms. We will be showing a new series of works by Hotwire Extensions over LDF when we return to London as well as gearing up for an as yet un announced solo show later this year, oh and we might be at an Art fair later this year…
