COLLECTIBLE In-Depth
Elis MONSPORT
March 2025
This series, COLLECTIBLE In-Depth, unveils the backstage of contemporary creation. Tackling various topics from personal designer processes to the position of collectible design on the global design market, COLLECTIBLE In-Depth offers different views to suit all tastes. Today we speak with Elis MONSPORT
C: Why do you focus on contemporary collectible design? What does it mean to you?
Ellis Monsport : I love pieces that balance between fine and applied art. My focus is on high-quality materials, craftsmanship, and reviving traditional techniques in a contemporary way. For example, glass engraving is an ancient craft that has been fading away. Through my work, I bring it back into interiors and architecture on a larger scale, making it relevant for today’s collectors and spaces. For me, collectible design means creative freedom—creating objects that are both aesthetically captivating and functional.
C: How do you balance technological advancements with traditional craftsmanship?
EM: I primarily work with glass, where many techniques are well established. However, innovation often comes from small changes—experimenting with materials, adjusting molds, or slightly shifting processes. It’s about pushing boundaries while respecting the craft’s fundamental principles. Some rules must always be followed—otherwise, the glass breaks!
C: Can you talk about a designer or gallerist you admire?
EM: I admire anyone who pursues their passion with dedication. Creating with enthusiasm and commitment is something I deeply respect. I particularly appreciate the work of Thaddeus Wolf, Marcin Rusak, and Kelly Wearstler, whose distinctive approaches inspire me.
C: Can you talk about a new piece/collection you’re releasing for COLLECTIBLE this year?
EM: I’m proud to present the Botanico Series, a collection that merges glass, design, and nature. Inspired by the jungle’s enchanting atmosphere and hidden predators, each piece is a dreamlike object where textures, engravings, and narratives intertwine. Using techniques like engraving and slumped glass, the series highlights the creative potential of these mediums while offering a fresh perspective on interior design.
