This series, COLLECTIBLE In-Depth, unveils the backstage of contemporary creation. Tackling various topics from personal designer processes to the position of collectible design on the global design market, COLLECTIBLE In-Depth offers different views to suit all tastes. Today we speak with Elis Monsport.
C: What do you think collectible design brings compared to other more massively produced pieces?
EM: Collectible design brings a unique and personal touch that mass-produced pieces often lack. Each item is typically crafted with a high level of artistry and craftsmanship, making it unique or part of a very limited series. This uniqueness and quality not only enhance the item's aesthetic and emotional value but also often increase its worth over time, making it a potential family heirloom that can be treasured and passed down through generations.
C: What can collectible design bring to the daily lives of the people who collect?
EM: Collectible design can enrich the daily lives of collectors in both visual and practical ways.
An artistic mirror, for instance, can not only expand a space but also serve as a unique piece of art in which one sees oneself. A sculpture might carry a scent or a memory. A handcrafted coffee table can double as a functional piece of furniture and a work of art. These pieces bring a unique blend of aesthetic pleasure and practical utility, making everyday interactions with them special and meaningful.
C: How do collaborations with artisans or craftspeople influence the final outcome of your collectible design pieces?
EM: Collaborations with artisans and craftspeople profoundly influence the final outcome of my collectible design pieces. I enjoy observing the material's transformation during the creative process and how each collaborator leaves their unique mark. It's crucial for me to work with individuals who understand and sensitively integrate my vision. Sometimes, I find myself as a mere observer, guide, and guardian of the project, ensuring the final result truly reflects my original intent.
C: Can you talk about a new piece / collection that you release for COLLECTIBLE this year?
EM: This year for COLLECTIBLE, I am showcasing three unique pieces, each representing a different approach to creation and materials, all inspired by summer memories.
The first piece is a mirrored wall object made from slumped glass, reflecting the sparkle of summer sunlight on water and evoking memories of swimming on hot days.
The second piece is a sculpture crafted from cast glass and concrete, capturing the fleeting beauty and intoxicating scent of climbing roses.
The third piece is an artisanal coffee table with an intricately carved surface, reminiscent of summer days spent in the shade of trees, with patterns of light and shadow created by the scorching sun.
