This new series, Design bites, unveil the backstage of contemporary creation. Tackling various topics from personal designer processes to the position of Collectible design on the global design market; these bites offer different views to suit all tastes. Today we talk with Clément Rougelot from 13desserts.
COLLECTIBLE: What have you been up to recently? What are the next projects or exhibitions you wish to highlight?
Clément Rougelot: This winter was a bit rough for us, as we had to close the Gallery after only a few months of opening, but it gave us time to think about new projects and collaborations. We will introduce our annual exhibition "AZUR" in Hyères in partnership with "La Villa Noailles". Designers will explore their take on French Riviera through a set of different productions (from the 25th of June to the 28th of August at Galerie 13Desserts, Hyères). As part of a 3 days exhibition, we’ll be in Copenhagen in September to show some pieces we’ve recently worked on. We’re quite proud to be invited at the French ambassy to do so.
“I sincerely think it is the best way to improve your own work, by opening yourself to others.”
C: Can you talk about a designer, whom you admire?
CR: I really admire the work of the Italian duo, Formafantasma. We had a little chat about them coming to our next exhibition, but they sadly can’t right now due to everything that’s going on and the lack of time. I hope to work with them soon.
I am really interested in the way they subtly connect craftsmanship and industrial production. All their project starts with an incredible research work to get a very tweaked final product.
C: How do you position your city in the global design market, what makes your city unique, trends?
CR: Hyères has an impressive history with design and art considering the size of the town and its location. It has been shining internationally for many years now, thanks to the events created by Jean Pierre Blanc and "La Villa Noailles". It has quickly become a really appreciated place to meet people from the industry and it doesn’t seem like it’s going to stop anytime soon. Truth be told, it seems more like the other way around, Hyeres has been getting more and more attention in the past few years. The exceptional setting of the region is attracting many people, as evidenced by the creation of the Carmignac Foundation on the island of Porquerolles or the recent installation of the Camondo School in Toulon.
