Curates

Since its inception, COLLECTIBLE collaborates, within and outside its walls, with design institutions and foundations and international design events, leading to groundbreaking commissions and curated projects. COLLECTIBLE Curates is born from this series of initiatives to embrace all those projects.

  • COLLECTIBLE Curates at Paris Design Week: from 3 to 8 September 2020 (Espace Commines, Le Marais, Paris)

COLLECTIBLE, the Brussels fair dedicated to contemporary collectible design, is taking part in Paris Design Week once more, following a successful first iteration last year at the 107Rivoli, the boutique at the MAD (Musée des Arts Décoratifs de Paris). This time with a larger show at the Espace Commines, situated in Le Marais in the heart of Paris, more than 20 designers will be presented in a scenography by Rotterdam-based architect Atelier Tomas Dirrix, based on the one he developed for the March edition of COLLECTIBLE in Brussels.

COLLECTIBLE called on local design expert Kristen de la Vallière, founder of the curatorial platform, say hi to_, to host four days of design discovery in their Paris iteration of COLLECTIBLE Curates. Kristen will liaise with visitors who want to learn more about the functional artists and work in the exhibition or merely to discuss the current collectible design scene.

  • COLLECTIBLE Curates at Dutch Design Week: 24 October 2019 (Kazerne, Eindhoven)

COLLECTIBLE has been invited by the Dutch Design Week to curate a special tour and a talk on Collectible Design.

“What does a thriving ecosystem for contemporary collectible design look like?”
Contemporary collectible design is increasingly popular and at the forefront of the design industry, yet still not easily grasped by professionals and the general public. Its market place is unique when compared to other sectors of design; it is more akin to contemporary art than traditional product design. In place of products, retails and B2B – collectible design offers unique pieces, limited editions and bespoke objects tailored to collectors. What exactly does this niche of design compose of and what systems does it follow? How does it reflect the contemporary art market that are well known by the art field: galleries, representations, fairs, secondary market? Despite being trained to work in the product design system which leads to brands and large studios, many designers choose to focus on collectible design. How can we contribute to this ecosystem, building it to be one that is healthy and benefitting for the designers?
